When Iran’s Sunni cleric Maulvi Abdul Hameed confirmed the rape of a Sunni girl, Iran’s protest started in the southeast. This anger started to boil on the streets only after the Friday prayers. The demonstration, led by the leaders of the Baloch community, turned violent. Small children were also involved in this demonstration. Since this anger was against the allegation of rape against a Shia commander, the government and the police were the target of the protesters.
Over 35 killed in violent protests
Sunni protesters surrounded several police stations in the city of Zahedan and tried to capture them. After which the police started firing on this crowd. More than 35 people are reported to have died in this firing on the crowd. The anger of the protesters was further intensified by the firing and the death of their people. After this, these people started targeting from government buildings to police stations. A police station in Shirabad was set on fire.
A commander also died in violent demonstration
A commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard was also killed in this clash between Iranian police and Baloch protesters. After which this violence spread in many cities of Iran. In Kurdistan, IRGC forces started direct firing on protesters. To stop the demonstration and this violence, the Iranian government shut down Zahedan’s internet, but by then this ruckus had spread to other cities.
Accused of pressurizing family
It is alleged that the security forces in Iran kidnapped three relatives of the victim girl to save their commander and forced them to make a statement that nothing happened to the girl. Pressure was also made on the victim’s family not to register a complaint, but the girl stood by her statement and as soon as this matter reached the Sunni community leaders and religious leaders, the entire Baloch and Sunni community took to the streets against the government. .
