Sri Lanka Tamil Issue: In the 51st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, India appealed to Sri Lanka to fully implement the 13th Amendment and hold provincial elections soon. In fact, the 13th Amendment provides for the transfer of power to the minority Tamil community in Sri Lanka. It was brought under the India-Sri Lanka Agreement in 1987.
While India has been pressuring Sri Lanka to implement the 13th Amendment, Sinhalese-majority fundamentalists of the ruling Sri Lanka People’s Party (SLPP) have been advocating for a complete abolition of the provincial council system established in 1987.
What did the Indian diplomat say
India on Monday asked Sri Lanka to take immediate and credible action in this regard. According to India, Sri Lanka has not made even mediocre progress on the promise of a political solution to the ethnic issue of the people of the particular region. The OHCHR released a report on the promotion of reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka. During an interactive dialogue on this report, India presented its stand. India said that it has always believed in the responsibility of countries for the promotion and protection of human rights and for constructive international dialogue and cooperation guided by the principles of the United Nations Charter.
During this, the Indian diplomat said that India’s approach to peace and reconciliation has consistently been that of a political solution in the framework of a united Sri Lanka, which ensures justice, peace, equality and respect for Tamils.
India’s appeal to Sri Lanka
“The current crisis in Sri Lanka has shown the limitations of the debt-driven economy and its impact on the standard of living,” the Indian diplomat said, adding that it is in Sri Lanka’s greatest interest to build the capacity of its citizens and Work towards their empowerment, for which the transfer of power at the grassroots level is neglected earlier. The Indian diplomat said that for this, early elections for the conduct of provincial councils will be in the interest of all citizens of Sri Lanka. “Therefore, we urge Sri Lanka to take immediate and credible action,” he said.
