Apple iPhone Export: The ‘Make in India’ campaign was started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. For this, Prime Minister Modi had announced the Production Linked Initiative Scheme (PLI Scheme) for the manufacture of smartphones at the domestic level, the effect of which was clearly visible. Apple had crossed the Rs 10,000 crore iPhone export figure in India by the end of FY 2022 (the fiscal year is between April 1 and March 31). On this achievement of Apple, Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship of India, Rajiv Chandrasekhar tweeted and praised PM Modi’s Production Linked Initiative plan.
These were the centers for making the iPhone
The responsibility of producing the iPhone domestically was given to Wistron and Foxconn. However, Foxconn Han Hai was closed for two months (December and January) for food poisoning. Along with this, Pegatron Company was the third production company of Apple, which was also selected under the PLI scheme.
Most of these iPhones were exported from India
The iPhone models that have been exported the most from India include the Apple iPhone SE 20202 (Apple iPhone SE 2020) smartphone. It was produced at Wistron Production Center. After iPhone SE 2020, iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 smartphones were exported the most from India. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 were manufactured in Foxconn Company.
Impact of PLI Scheme
Apple started producing the iPhone domestically in India about two years ago. For this, the government had announced its PLI scheme for smartphones in April 2020. However, due to Kovid 19, the scheme could not take off. In such a situation, the 5-year scheme was increased by one year to 6 years by the government. According to experts, this scheme helped in making India an export center of phones. Along with this, the domestic demand could be met to an extent. According to media reports, the central government is preparing to spend a total of Rs 40,951 crore in 5 years for smartphone PLI.
Figures expected to reach 20,000 crores by 2023
Apple exported iPhones worth Rs 8,000 crore from India in the last 5 months. This export includes phones of iPhone 11, 12 and 13. This figure is expected to reach Rs 20,000 crore by March 2023. Let us tell you that till March 2022, exports were mainly done to Europe and Middle East countries. The country is slowly and steadily hitting the strategy of China Plus One. Apple Taiwanese companies Foxconn, Pegatron and Vistan are still making iPhones in India. There is also news that now the government will start its scheme for laptops and iPads as well.
