After the retirement of Aaron Finch, Cricket Australia faces the challenge of choosing a new captain for the ODIs. The name of Steve Smith is at the fore in the race to become the new captain. Despite the ban on captaincy, David Warner also remains in this race. Apart from these two, the names of Alex Carey and Glenn Maxwell are also in discussion for the new Australian captain.
According to a survey, 49 percent of people want to see Steve Smith become the captain of Australia’s ODI team. David Warner has got the support of 21 percent of the people. Glenn Maxwell has been at number three in this serve and 11 per cent people want to see him take charge of Australia’s ODI team.
Australia’s wicket-keeper batsman Alex Carey is also in the race to become the captain. Carey has been voted by 8 percent to become the next captain of Australia. Test team captain Pat Cummins, however, is far behind in this race. Cummins got only 4 percent of the vote. 5 percent of the people have voted for Mitchell Marsh to become the next captain of Australia.
Warner’s ban may be lifted
Cricket Australia does not see any problem in making Steve Smith the captain. After the ball-tampering controversy, Steve Smith stayed away from Australia’s leadership group for almost three years. But last year he was made the vice-captain of the Test team. Therefore, he is more likely to be made the captain of the ODI team.
David Warner cannot currently become the captain of the team due to Cricket Australia’s leadership ban. But for the last few months, there has been a demand to remove this ban on Warner. This ban on Warner is to be discussed next month. If this ban imposed on Warner is removed, then he can also stake a strong claim on the captaincy. Although Warner is 36 years old, due to this also his claim looks a bit weak.
