T20 World Cup 2022 Ben Stokes: Former England captain Ian Morgan was extremely impressed with all-rounder Ben Stokes’ performance for his second T20 World Cup trophy with an unbeaten 52, saying the all-rounder stands up for the team in big matches. Some questions were raised on Stokes’ selection in the T20 World Cup squad, while he did not perform much in T20. But all those doubts were quashed when Stokes rose to the occasion and gave England a five-wicket win with one over remaining in reply to Pakistan’s 137/8 in a 49-ball innings.
He said, “Stokes is just such a special player. In big matches, he stands up for his country when his country needs him. It’s an incredible skill.”
Morgan said on Sky Sports after the end of the match, “When things start to go wrong, Ben is the player who thinks calmly under pressure and performs brilliantly. He has done it many times.”
Morgan, who retired from international cricket in July 2022, and was commentating on Sunday’s final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, believes England can be considered one of the best limited-overs teams as they now play 50-over cricket. It is the first team to hold the trophy of 20 overs. “It’s an incredible feeling. This team deserves it. They have played brilliantly in the group stages and have done their best against India in the semi-finals,” he said.
Jos Buttler said, “We don’t want to be known as a team just for our style of play. We used to be known like this in 50 overs and then won the 50 over World Cup in 2019. Now the same in T20 It has happened. Our players have been fantastic.”
Asked after the end of the match whether he doubted that the match would be lost to England, Stokes said he had no such doubts in his mind. “I didn’t feel like it was out of our hands. I’ve tried to make sure I stay there for as long as possible at the end,” he said.
He said, “It’s easy when you have a batsman at the end of the innings and it’s never really a panic situation when it’s less than eight runs per over and Moeen Ali really got us going. “
Test captain Stokes revealed that England had started their best season in the T20 World Cup after a five-run loss to Ireland in a rain-hit Super 12 match at the MCG.
